Fretted Clavichord
Carl Fudge#35 (1976)

Specifications:

Clavichord by Carl Fudge, #35, 1976Range: : 45 notes, 4 octaves , CC/EE-c3 short octave, chromatic from A, double-fretted from c to c3, non-transposing (currently tuned to a' = 415 Hz but 440 is also possible)

Disposition:
29 double-strung courses in steel or brass, bottom (short) octave unfretted (8 courses), the balance is fretted (c/c#, d, d#/e, f/f#, g/g#, a, a#/b, etc except for final treble notes a''/a#'', b''/c''').  The tangents are currently set to give a circulating temperament although the maker claimed it possible to set for (1/4 comma) meantone, as well.

Decoration:
This fine clavichord is constructed from cherry.  It was originally lightly stained and given an oil finish. The instrument has no stand (most of the photos were taken with the instrument set on a player's bench).  For such a simple instrument there are a number of nicely-turned details that add interest and give delight.  There are scrolls at each end of the bridge.  The natural touch plates are cherry and the sharp blocks and arcaded key fronts are made from rosewood.  Also please notice the lid fixture for the lid lanyard, and the carved pull on the tool compartment lid.

Dimensions:
length 43"; width 12 1/4";
depth 5 3/8" (includes lid);
weight 26 lbs in its carrying case

This is a delightfully small, VERY portable clavichord.  The action is comfortable and well balanced; the touch at and past impact is quite well judged.  The dip is appropriately shallow and the keys lie easily under the fingers.

The case displays the characteristic twist of age in quite a moderate degree.  There is a crack in the soundboard that runs from the keywell edge to the bridge.  We have chosen NOT to include its repair in the offering price so that the prospective buyer may have the choice.  The crack is reported to have appeared after an air trip and the owners suspect the instrument was not given particularly gentle treatment at the time.  It has been stable for many years now and clearly does not affect the sound in any negative way.

The instrument is being offered fully restrung.  Accompanying the instrument the new owner will receive a tuning wrench capable of fitting in the petite tool compartment, tuning fork and new wedges as well as a full complement of spare strings and stringing schedule.  Also included is a fine zippered carrying case (by Jean Cavallaro) constructed of fleece-lined Nylon duck.
