Double-manual harpsichord (BC-1)Description: In view of the soundboard painting, we have dropped the pitch to one whole tone below modern pitch (a' = 392 Hz).  (Although it sounds well at either a’ = 415/440 or a’ = 392/415, keeping it at the lower pitch decreases the stress on the case substantially and slows the process of distortion.)

As an adjunct to the package of repairs for this instrument, we are prepared to reconfigure the action to transpose two semitones which will enable it to play at a' = 440 Hz.  At its new, lower pitch it has a full, clear sound.

Although it displays minor distortion we feel structural repairs are not called for.  There are four soundboard cracks that deserve to be repaired. There are also a number of minor cracks which we do not recommend fixing.

The buyer should be prepared to provide humidification during dry seasons.

The offering price includes minor structural work, restringing and a complete renewal of the action in Delrin jacks and plectra.  It will leave the shop functioning as a new instrument. The buyer could opt for wooden jacks at extra cost.

Besides, one does not often get a chance to own a soundboard painting by Sheridan Germann and this one is a delight.  This is a lovely, well-preserved instrument with a proven track record.  It will serve well in any capacity: solo, continuo, living room, public performance.
